Thermal Battery Explanation and Inspiration:

The GoSun Grill's Thermal Battery is a break-through innovation for both the consumer solar energy and the culinary industry. It's a smart way to capture heat before rain, night, clouds or while you’re out and about. Click here for a more in depth explanation.

The battery was inspired by our work in Guatemala during its extensive rainy season. Our pilot study’s participants used the stoves daily, but needed a solution that could cook in the afternoon rain. What started as a simple sand filled battery, became the subject of a year long exploration to find a medium that could absorb large amounts of heat and emit that heat at an even temperature for optimal cooking.

With a charged battery you can cook in confidence that no matter the weather, your food will still finish. The battery is also a more intelligent way to utilize the potential of the GoSun cooking technology, capturing every last drop of sunshine and converting that into useable heat down the road.

By placing appropriate and practical solar technologies in the right hands, GoSun is focusing on the most efficient, affordable and acceptable solutions. 

Working with the help of partners such as the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, GoSun is helping lead a worldwide effort to reduce reliance on dirty cooking fuels, such as wood and charcoal, with the goal of alleviating a major cause of respiratory illness, especially in women and children. With more than 2.5 billion affected daily, this is one of the world’s greatest problems and possibly the largest cause of preventable death known.

GoSun Stove is young company made up of a talented team of designers, engineers and change makers with their hearts set on serving a broad customer base with exceptional products. We are passionate about our work and our customers and always on the lookout for ways to engage and support our community.

Founder and Inventor, Patrick Sherwin, followed an idea and a dream for over ten years to create the GoSun Stove and launch the first product in 2013 here on Kickstarter. Over the past couple years, the GoSun team has grown rapidly while remaining focused on the Fuel-Free Frontier. 

GoSun’s business model has two distinct initiatives: GoSun Stove and GoSun Global, with different strategies, product offerings and markets that share the same basic technology. GoSun Global is a social enterprise leveraging business and impact investing as a mechanism to perform good in the developing world.

From concept to cooker, the GoSun team is diligent about a design process and allowing for creative expansion.  Adhering to principles pioneered by IDEO.org, we tend to churn ideas through a revolving and narrowing funnel and allow a Human-Centered Approach to determine what will stand the test of time.  

Planning, designing and testing are critical before coming to market with an idea, but it is equally important to get in front of customers and make some mistakes.  We believe strongly in working within the space between the imaginative, creative chaos and a rooted, technical basis in science.  Our cyclical design process can be summed up in these few, important steps.
